Fun with Water bugs

Edward Tsyrlin, is co-author of The Waterbug Book, the award-winning book about water creatures written for uninitiated audiences. Eddie and his friends bring the stream or pond into Australia's classrooms! Students will learn about the lives of the aquatic critters and what their presence meanss for the health of the ecosystem. This presentation can be in the classroom or at your local stream or pond.

The lesson will begin with a discussion about what students already know about their local stream or pond, and the animals that live there. Depending on the age group, various water conservation issues and issues of water pollution will be discussed.

In the case of classroom presentations, live water bugs will be brought in. Images of different live bugs will be projected and magnified using a video camera and the school’s TV set. Students will learn about the lives and adaptations of different aquatic creatures and how to identify them.

Trays of aquatic bugs will be distributed among groups of 3-4 students and they will be asked to catch their bugs themselves using spoons and squirters in order to identify them. Naturally, this is the most rewarding part of the lesson.

Finally, students will learn how to relate biodiversity to the health of the habitat. This very popular presentation can be adapted for all age groups. Live kits with aquatic invertebrates that require virtually no maintenance, and 'Urban Waterbugs' posters can be ordered for follow up activities.
